National park Paanajarvi in Karelia

Category: journeys. Posted: 03.09.2011 11:11

In July I visited Paanajärvi — a national park located in the northwestern part of Russia near the border with Finland. Karelia surprised by the good weather and I managed to take a lot of colorful pictures. I offer you a small photo report devoted to the journey.

So Paanajarvi is a national park where nature was carefully preserved in its original form. Rivers there have pure water, forests conceal rare birds and animals. The park is located in the most elevated part of Karelia, the highest mountain of the region is situated here.

The Olanga river is opened for fishing in July and August. You can catch trout, grayling, whitefish and other salmonid fish. Pike, perch, burbot and roach can also be found here.

There are many beautiful rapids on the river. Kivakkakoski is the largest rapid in the region. Water level drops on 12 meters there.

The threshold can be seen even from a mountaintop Kivakka located nearby. (You can find it on panorama at the end of the page)

In the picture you can see splashing water between the rocks - this is the first stage of the threshold Kivakkakoski. By the way, the water in the river is very pure, you can drink without hesitation.

Human's impact on nature is being minimized by the Park stuff. Visiting the park is made strictly by vouchers, fires are permitted only in designated areas, fishing has limitations. Therefore, a meeting with the hare, fox, rare birds and other animals is common.

Blueberries

In the woods covered with a carpet of mosses you can find a lot of berries: blueberry, cranberry, blueberry, crowberry and cloudberry. Tremendous mushrooms grow there in the end of the summer.

The water in Paanajarvi lake is so clear that you can see the its bottom at a depth of two meters and more. Maximum depth of the lake is 128 meters.

In calm weather water surface becomes a mirror reflecting the sky and the banks around.

Myantukoski waterfall

In my opinion Myantyukoski is the most beautiful waterfall in Karelia. It is situated on one of the rivers flowing into Paanajarvi lake. The waterfall's height is eight meters.

In park there are several walking trails that allow to visit and explore the local sights: mountains, waterfalls, rapids, cairns and other natural objects. They are equipped with walkways, stairs and benches, created by the Park staff and volunteers.

In one of a fine sunny days we went to Mount Kivakka. The view from its top is just amazing!

The mountain slopes are covered with moss, lichens, small shrubs and stones. Tall trees are rare.

That was interesting to watch the bend of the river Olanga. Huge threshold Kivakkakoski does not seem big (it can be found on the panorama presented below: two converging streams on the river).

Definitely a journey to Paanajarvi became one of the most striking impressions of the summer. I recommend to visit the national park to all nature lovers, fishermen and photographers!
