Journey to Kamchatka. Tolbachik volcano.

Category: journeys. Posted: 27.07.2012 10:12

In 2007 I visited Kamchatka for the first time. The land of volcanoes greatly impressed me. I deсided to publish more photos taken during the journey to Tolbachik volcano.

Tolbachik plateau is a big area formed after the eruption of lava cones to the south of Tolbachinsky volcano. Its present appearance was formed after the so-called Big Tolbachic Fissure Eruptions that occurred in 1975 and 1976.

The first day was rather foggy so I didn't see outskirts far enough. But it was clear that I was surrounded by extraterrestrial landscape.

By the way the first Soviet lunar rover «Lunokhod-1» was tested here in 1970 because the area is very similar to the Moon surface.

Large stones in the photos are called «volcanic bombs». These pieces of lava were ejected during a volcanic eruption, and becаme hard in flight.

During climbing to the top of the volcano weather was changing to the best.

But on the edge of Tolbachik's crater it began to snow. So I failed to take photos of surrounding volcanoes.

But after going down to the camp sun returned and I took some terrific landscapes.

On the second day I went to the area called «dead forest». There were a lot of trees died after erruption.

«Dead forest» is a valuable source of firewood because there is no any trees in a large part of Tolbachik plateau.

It is obvious that Kamchatka volcanoes are very interesting and beautiful sites to visit. I hope that I'll have opportunity to go there one more time!
